Sri Sowmya Narayana Perumal Thirukovil, surrounded by a high walls on its four sides, with a Rajagopuram (Main tower) at the entrance which is spectacular to behold. The inner infrastructure, mainly sannidhis (separate shrines) are unlike other temples. Inside the temple complex, The shrine for Narayana is constructed in form of three stages, similar to that of three floors in a building. This interprets as 

1. Boologam (earth), 
2. Thiruparkadal, 
3. Vaikundham. 

Narayana appears in three stages in three forms. 

1. In Ground floor as Krishna in dancing posture. 
2. Next level he is sayana thirukolam (sayana = reclining, thirukolam = posture), a posture resting on Adhisesha. 
3. And top most level in standing posture as Sri Sowmya Narayana Perumal. 

This form of appearances of Narayana has been poetically described as 

1. Nindran (means Standing posture), 
2. Kidanthan (means sleeping posture), 
3. Aadinan (means dancing posture) by Alwars.

Degree

There was a competition among the consorts of Vishnu namely 

1. Sridevi, 
2. Bhoodevi and 
3. Neeladevi on the degree of their devotion to Vishnu. 

Sridevi descended down to earth and repaired a sequestrated spot surrounded by paddy fields. She sat in devotion and influenced by her power of worship, all sages started worshipping her at the place. 

Realising that living alone would be improper, she engendered a theertha (water body) and propitiated Vishnu. Pleased by her devotion, Vishnu appeared at the spot. Bhudevi and Neeladevi followed her footsteps and acceded that Sridevi was the most devoted among them. Vishnu desired and stayed (thangal in Tamil) along with his consorts in the place.
